On every trip to Hawaii – and anywhere else with clear(ish) water – I usually spend a couple good sessions in bright afternoon light trying to make a few photos of the waves. Emily puts up with it as she can just close her eyes, enjoy the sun and crashing of the waves and pretend she doesn't know the guy with the camera standing in the surf, trying not to get hit by waves.

Sunset Crashers
We visited Shore Acres, near Coos Bay this evening to look at the Christmas light display, but arrived early enough to take in the sunset over the big waves first. I like the many tiny little lights, but this is so much better.
Waves
Emily, the kids and I hung out at the beach in Carlsbad on our vacation with Emily's brother Dan and his wife Beth. Dan's friend Brian came down with his two daughters and a couple of Body boards. Dan and Brian both caught a handful of good waves each and I managed to catch one, undocumented wave from way out - all the way in. I was pretty wiped afterward and didn't catch another.
The waves were fast and furious, breaking really close to shore in long spaced out sets. I managed to get a few good shots from shore....man, I wish I'd had a longer lens!
