Film compared to Digital- Sunset Light

I just got a roll of film back from development and matched up a couple photos with their digital counterparts taken back in July. (I don't shoot a lot of film) I thought it would be interesting to post them here so you could see the difference.

Technical notes-

The digital photos were made with the Fujifilm X100s, with the aperture set at f/2. This camera has a 23mm lens (35mm equivalent). I shot RAW as usual and processed to my memory with a couple small adjustments to exposure.

The film is Kodak Portra 400, over exposed by one stop and the camera/lens is my Olypmpus OM1 with the 50mm set at f/1.8

Little Girl Hair

Someone has been growing out her bangs over the summer and it makes for a bit of crazy by the end of the day.

This is another shot using an APSC specific lens in crop mode on the A7. I'm a bit surprised by the sharpness and detail even in these lower Mexapixel cropped images, but I'll take it!

Simpson Beach

This photo was made over the long Thanksgiving weekend. Film is funny like that. Back when all we had was film, I would get rolls developed much quicker, but it was also much less expensive, and everything was more accesible.

I really like this image and think it has a bit of a vintage vibe even though it's a modern film. Most of that is probably the low light. I'm not quite sure what shutter speed I used, but I remember being a little concerned about bracing myself, so it must have been fairly slow.

Mt Hood Jonsrud Sunrise

I took a quick drive with my two youngest kids this morning to catch the sunrise at Jonsrud point in Sandy. We got a few shots of the sun lighting up the side of the mountain as it was rising a little to the South.

We met another photographer who was just finishing up and had driven a lot further than we had to try to get some shots of Comet ISON. His name is Chip McAlpineand he has made some really fantastic astrophotography images.

Always fun to meet other folks who don't mind getting out in the cold and the wind for a good image!
