February Film Frames

Another month, 50 more frames. Shortly after receiving and processing the scans for the past 2 and a half months I contacted the lab to see about making some tweaks to the scans to fit my shooting style going forward. They kindly offered to rescan the whole set to preserve the blacks nd highlights for me and I used those new scans for this month's post.

I'm noticing that I've been trying to make this film work in winter's lower light and truthfully I'm looking forward to the brigher daylight of spring and summer for my film shooting.

I also noticed that I have a bit of a shutter curtain issue at the fastest shutter speed of 1/1000 on my OM1. I'll need to get that looked at. This whole month was shot with that camera using Kodak Portra 400. Development and scan was handled by The FIND Lab.

January Film Frames

I stockpiled exposed film for a bit these last couple months. So though a little late, 6 rolls of film are now developed and here are the ones that belong to January.

A technical note or two-

Don't look too closely or you will see that focusing wasn't my strong suit. Needless to say, I'll be taking my time to make sure I get it right going forward. I tend to like shooting wide open which lends itself to this sort of mistake easily. I'm also seriously considering an autofocus, fixed-lens camera to take that piece out of the equation for my daily carry camera. I don't mind slowing down, but that's not really the point of this project now is it?

As far as gear, It's a mix of the Olympus OM1 with the Zuiko 35mm f/2 and the Hasselblad 500CM with the Zeiss 80mm f/2.8 (though to be truthful, it's the only lens I own for this camera and I wish it were just fixed). All the Hasselblad shots were made with Kodak Portra 400 and the OM1, 35mm shots start with Fuji 400h and switched to Portra 400 on January 21st.

Developing and scanning were handled by The FIND Lab and this is my first time using them. I tend to lean towards a contrasty look with true rich blackpoints and shadows, so I'll be asking them to scan a little more in that vein on the next set as I had pull down the exposure on these scans about 1.5 stops across the board.

2016 Daily Film Frames Project

In past years I’ve done projects primarily to push myself. While the most obvious difference is quantity, the quality and the artistic vision of my photos is really different at the end as well. As I considered whether I would do something similar in 2016, I realized I’d need more of a specific direction this time around as daily photos have become my new normal.

This year I’m exposing at least one frame of film a day. I’ll be using at least a couple different cameras and at this point, 2 different formats – 35 and 120. With previous projects I chose just one photo from each day and posted it on my site, but this project is different. Instead of the heavy culling and editing workflow I’ve had previously, I’ll develop each roll of film and post every photo on the roll with the date information. I’m writing a quick daily entry in Day One to keep track of the details (location and technical info) and dates.

The reasons for the particulars? Shooting film still feels complicated and mysterious to me. Though I understand proper exposure, and consistently get good results I’m happy with, I tend not to trust myself and thus save film for special occasions. I’d like to change that. I want to pick up a film camera and capture a moment just as comfortably as I do with a digital camera.

You can expect the first photos sometime in the next couple weeks as I'm just now getting the first couple rolls developed.

Late Spring Light

One of the things I love most about shooting with film is the wait. I didn't really wait to develop this film 6 months, but have been sharing the images from these couple rolls slowly. I've had these scans for a couple months now. Certainly, it's nice to have a little window to a warmer day when it's just above freezing out.

Coatings

I was just doing some organizing, cleaning and such and the different colored reflections from the anti-glare coatings on my Zuiko lenses made for a really cool scene.

St Johns Bridge

I've been in Portland far too long to have never posted a photo of this bridge. It's also middle-of-the-day light, but I don't care. I stopped on my way to visit one of my offices and drop off this roll. Sometimes you just shoot with what you've got.

Jonsrud Wildflower

As I've mentioned here before, Jonsrud point is one of my favorite places at sunrise. This particular morning the view out toward the mountain was a bust, but I hung around for a good hour afterward and as the sun broke over the top of the clouds, everything lit up in Oregon Summer Sunrise light. This iimage is from my latest couple rolls of film from my Hasselblad.

I'm not sure what species of flower this is, and not for a lack of Googling. If you know, enlighten us in the comments!

Old Bag of Film

When you move, sometimes you find a bunch of old 10 yr old (or older) film. I can't wait to get it developed and see what's going on here.
